Introducing TruShear from Republic Oil Tools—a purpose-built mechanical safety device for capillary tubing deployed with electrical submersible pump systems.

During a workover, an ESP can unexpectedly part or fall into the wellbore. The resulting tensile load may pull the capillary tubing downward, backdrive the surface spool, and create a serious risk to personnel and equipment.

Installed above the ESP discharge, TruShear divides the capillary system into an upper section connected to the surface spool and a lower section routed alongside the ESP. Under normal conditions, it functions as a full-strength capillary connection during deployment, operation, and retrieval.

During an ESP drop event, TruShear is designed to separate cleanly at 800 lb of tensile load. This allows the ESP and lower capillary section to fall as a controlled assembly while the upper capillary remains stationary, helping prevent reverse runaway of the surface spool.
