Where to start…. Permanent Magnet Motors (PMMs) have been around for several decades. However, the technology is just starting to gain widespread attention in the US. This has led to several companies trying to implement PMMs but there has been a lack of safety systems to keep their employees safe. Historically, grounding the three leads of the power cable together has been the best way to prevent the motor from spinning. However, this method is only full proof if you can ensure there is cable integrity. If two legs of the cable go to ground then you could be in trouble, quickly. Furthermore, the three leads must be pulled apart to splice on/remove the wellhead penetrator and connect/disconnect to the surface infrastructure. This puts hands on the copper leads when the motor could potentially be spinning and generating lethal power. The most dangerous time is often right as the wellhead is removed and the wellhead penetrator with it. The first few feet the tubing string is pulled up gives a high potential that a solid plug would move downhole and cause lethal power to come back up the cable.
